How To Stay Fit Through The Holiday Eating Season

The last thing you want to do is worry about dieting and how to stay fit through the holiday and missing out on all of the fun. Who says you have to? What if you can enjoy all of the fun guilt-free? Read my top 10 tips to staying fit during the busiest and most decadent season of the year.\r\n

1// Leave your gym bag and shoes in your car

\r\nThe amount of excuses for not going to the gym is higher during this season with more parties happening and loved ones visiting. Make the getting to the gym as easy as possible by planning ahead and leaving you gym bag in your car. Pack your week of gym outfits and place them in your trunk. You will eliminate the laundry excuse and the “I forgot my clothes at home” excuse. Just don’t leave your dirty clothes in your car. (You can also get a Mountainside Fitness locker and laundry service to make your life a lot easier. Just ask the helpful staff at the front desk about the executive lockers).\r\n

2// Hangout with your friends at the gym Phoenix fitness gym

\r\nOften times we want to catch up with our friends over dinner, but why not use your Mountainside Fitness buddy pass, and ask your friend to meet you at the gym? You can bond over burning fat, and then grab a protein smoothie afterwards.\r\n

3// Go to sleep in your workout clothes

\r\nIt’s hard to wake up early and go to the gym when it’s still dark outside and your bed is so cozy. Catch some extra zzz’s by going to sleep in your workout clothes to make your life easier. All you have to do is roll out of bed, brush your teeth and go. If that’s too uncomfortable for you, put them at the foot of your bed or hanging in the doorway to the bathroom.\r\n

\r\nCookies and candy are everywhere this time of year, and you definitely don’t want to feel like you have to miss out on the fun. But rather than partaking in the extra fat and sugar that might be in those baked goods, quench your sugar craving with a chocolate protein bar or health bar you brought from home. I, personally, love dark chocolate and sea salt KIND Bars. They only have 5 grams of sugar, and keep my sugar cravings at bay. Or, if you feel like rewarding yourself while at the gym, before or after your workout, try one of the amazing smoothies at the M Café.\r\n\r\n \r\n

5// Schedule your workouts for the rest of the year

\r\nWe only have 38 days until the New Year, and I’m sure that schedule of yours is filling up rather quickly. Schedule your workouts before it gets too full, and put reminders on your phone. This will ensure that your health and wellness will be maintained and you can finish this year strong.\r\n

6// Gift yourself new workout gear

\r\nCelebrate the holidays early by stocking up on great fitness gear during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping events. I don’t know about you, but when I get new clothes I want to wear them right away. This could be a great incentive to get to the gym.\r\n

7// High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

\r\nThere are many approaches to exercise, but when time is short and you need to get a great workout in HIIT is the way to go. Specifically, the Tababta method, which is offered at Mountainside Fitness, is a very efficient approach. It’s actually proven to increase endurance, strengthen muscle and burn more fat than a 60 minute aerobic workout. The Mountainside Fitness class is only 40 minutes long. If you can’t make the class times regularly, try attending one or two and then try doing the moves on your own at the gym. 8// Schedule Meetings with a Trainer

\r\nGift yourself personal training sessions for the holidays, and schedule your meetings with your trainer now until the rest of the year. This will keep you committed throughout the holidays.\r\n

9// Crockpot Cooking

\r\nWhen many of us are pressed for time we are tempted to eat out more than usual. Crockpots are your best friend during busy weeks. Throw chicken breasts in the crockpot with some chicken broth, cook for 6 to 8 hours, come home and empty the liquid in the crock pot, shred the chicken with two forks and you can make any of the following things:\r\n


  • Chicken salad wraps (add grapes, celery, red onion, mayo with olive oil and curry for flavor)
  • \r\n

  • Chicken salad on lettuce
  • \r\n

  • BBQ chicken sandwich (just mix in BBQ sauce)
  • \r\n

  • BBQ chicken salad (mix the chicken with bbq sauce and add to a bed of lettuce)
  • \r\n

  • Chicken tacos (add a can of Rotel to your crockpot to give the chicken more flavor. Then add to a wheat or corn tortilla, with beans and a little cheese)
  • \r\n


10// Choose Seltzer over Tonic Water

\r\nMixed drinks can have a lot of calories in them. One way you can cut down on the sugar is to ask for Seltzer water instead of tonic water.
