How to Stay Active When the Holidays Take Over Your Social Calendar

Styles\r\n\r\nThe holidays are a time to connect with friends and family, but sometimes our calendars get overloaded with parties and hangouts, which can get in the way of our fitness routine. Here are some simple tips to stay active by balancing your social calendar and health during the holiday season:\r\n

1| Plan your hangouts around activity

\r\nWe often gather around food and drink to connect, but why not play with your friends like you used to when you were a kid? Go ice skating downtown, play wiffle ball with your family after Thanksgiving, or go on a walk after dessert. If those things don’t appeal to you go to the mall and get plenty of walking in while you shop. Anything is better than sitting for long periods of time. Or bring your visiting family members or friends to the gym for a fun partner workout.\r\n

2| Wear a pedometer

\r\nWearing a pedometer will show you the amount of activity you have had in your day, and just might give you the kick in the rear to get a workout in at home if you missed your gym visit. There are even more advanced devices out there, but if you don’t have the budget for them a pedometer works just as well.\r\n

3| Squeeze in exercising while getting ready for your day and for bed

\r\nWe all get dressed for the day and eventually climb into bed at the end of it. Since you’ll already be spending your time brushing your teeth and combing your hair, you may as well squeeze some exercise in. For example:\r\n

    \r\n

  • 20 squats while you brush your teeth
  • \r\n

  • 30 calf raises while you brush your hair
  • \r\n

  • 30 pushups before you get dressed
  • \r\n

  • 30 crunches before you put on your makeup
  • \r\n

  • 20 walking lunges as you back your bag for the morning
  • \r\n

\r\n(repeat this in the evening)\r\n

4| Pack your lunch and eat at home before you go out

\r\nBy eating at home and packing your lunch you know exactly what you are eating, and you can fill yourself up with healthy choices. When we go out to dinner or lunch and we’re really hungry we can be tempted to choose entrees that are higher in fat and calories. If you eat beforehand you can plan to simply order a drink or a small appetizer and still enjoy the company of your friends.
